Dive deeper into Māori heritage at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, where students hone traditional skills in weaving, wood, stone and bone carving. Our wānanga (school) serves as a beacon for indigenous culture.

What is the difference between Te Rā and Te Pō?
Te Rā is the daytime guided experience — the geothermal valley, the arts institute and the kiwi centre. Te Pō is the evening one, which adds a formal welcome, a 45-minute performance in the carved meeting house and a hāngī buffet dinner. They are separate tickets and cover different ground.
Is a cultural performance included?
Not on the base Te Rā ticket. There is a combo that adds a performance in the carved meeting house Te Aronui a Rua for a little more, which is worth it if this is your only Te Puia visit.
Is this the living village?
No. Te Puia is a 60-hectare cultural centre and arts institute in the Whakarewarewa geothermal valley; the living village of Whakarewarewa is a separate organisation with its own entrance on Tryon Street. Both are worth doing, and they do not overlap much.
Is food included?
No — food, drinks, hotel pickup and gratuities are all excluded from this ticket. There is a restaurant on site.
Does it sell out?
It is flagged as likely to sell out, which is unusual for a daytime ticket. Book the date ahead; cancellation is free.
